Michael Jackson’s Dangerous Tour Jacket Fetches Over £94,000 at Auction

A jacket worn by Michael Jackson during his Dangerous world tour has been sold at auction for over £94,000.

The iconic black garment was initially estimated to sell for as little as £16,080 ($20,000), but it fetched nearly six times that amount, with a final hammer price of £94,116 ($117,000).

The jacket, featuring a military-style design with leather straps and gold buckles, attracted 22 bids from devoted fans of the late King of Pop.

Worn by Jackson during his second world tour in 1992 and 1993 to promote his album Dangerous, the jacket showcases the singer’s distinctive on-stage style and flamboyant performances.

The sale took place as part of a three-day auction at Julien’s Auctions in Los Angeles, California, United States.

Described as a custom-made black military-style jacket with gold hardware embellishments, the listing highlights its composition of black polyester, a black satin collar, leather straps with gold grommets, buckles, and zippers adorning the front, sleeves, and shoulders.

The jacket, worn open with decorative buckles and leather straps, does not feature functional openings, pockets, or internal compartments. It is fully lined with black viscose and has a loose, straight/boxy cut with a slightly tailored waist, allowing for easy removal during performances.

Accompanying the jacket is a black leather belt with gold hardware, rings, rivets, and a buckle, fastened with Velcro. The interior label indicates that the jacket was designed by Dennis Tompkins and Michael Bush, who incorporated leather and metal hardware for the costume’s embellishments and surface design.

The ‘Dangerous’ World tour, spanning from June 27, 1992, to November 11, 1993, consisted of 69 shows and attracted a total of 4,111,000 attendees. Profits from the tour benefited various charities, including Michael Jackson’s Heal the World Foundation.

The jacket is in overall good condition, although some discoloration and staining from makeup can be observed on the interior collar, cuffs, and jacket opening. The buyer of the jacket will also receive a copy of the tour DVD as part of the purchase.

The auction took place on May 21, 2023.
